2018-09-12: Saint-Restitut in Drôme Provencale 
We take our time to travel down to the south of France. After the Ideal Palace of the Postman Cheval in Hauterives it will be a walk on the plateau of Saint-Restitut. A beautiful circuit of a dozen kilometers and 36 geocaches. Most often in the undergrowth which will protect us from the sun of lead.The walk begins with a hexagonal chapel built in the early 15th century on a rocky spur above the village.

Then we discover the remains of what was the activity and the main wealth of the plateau: limestone quarries.

Already exploited by the Romans they remained until the beginning of the last century. There are some impressive remains that we take great pleasure in exploring: The Caves Cathedrals.

 Back in the village, the fountain of the square of the Romanesque church of the 12th century gives us a welcome refreshment.

We stroll a little in this picturesque little village of white stones with narrow streets before reaching Gandalf on the quiet (and free) motorhome area at the foot of the village.

Nous prenons notre temps pour descendre vers le sud de la France. Après le Palais Idéal du facteur Cheval à Hauterives ça sera une balade sur le plateau de Saint-Restitut. Un beau circuit d’une douzaine de kilomètres et 36 géocaches. Le plus souvent en sous-bois ce qui nous protègera du soleil de plomb.

La balade commencera par une chapelle hexagonale édifiée au début du XVème siècle sur un éperon rocheux au-dessus du village.

Ensuite le circuit nous fera découvrir les restes de ce que fût l’activité et la richesse principale du plateau : les carrières de calcaire. Déjà exploitées par les romains elles le restèrent jusqu’au début du siècle dernier. Il en reste des vestiges impressionnants que nous prenons grand plaisir à explorer : Les Caves Cathédrales.

De retour au village, la fontaine de la place de l’église romane du XIIème siècle nous procure un rafraichissement bienvenu. Nous flânons encore un peu dans ce pittoresque petit village de pierres blanches aux ruelles étroites avant de rejoindre Gandalf sur la paisible aire de camping-cars (gratuite) au pied du village.

Wir nehmen uns Zeit, um in den Süden Frankreichs zu reisen. Nach dem Idealen Palast des Postboten Cheval in Hauterives wird es ein Spaziergang auf der Hochebene von Saint-Restitut sein. Eine wunderschöne Strecke von einem Dutzend Kilometer und 36 Geocaches. Am häufigsten im Unterholz, das uns vor der Bleisonne schützt.Der Spaziergang beginnt mit einer sechseckigen Kapelle, die Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts auf einem Felsvorsprung über dem Dorf erbaut wurde.
Dann entdecken wir die Überreste dessen, was die Aktivität und der größte Reichtum des Plateaus war: Kalksteinbrüche.
Von den Römern bereits ausgebeutet, blieben sie bis Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts im Betrieb. Es gibt einige beeindruckende Überreste, die wir gerne entdecken: Die Höhlenkathedralen.
Zurück im Dorf. Der Brunnen des Platzes der romanischen Kirche aus dem 12. Jahrhundert bietet eine willkommene Erfrischung an.
Wir spazieren ein wenig in diesem malerischen kleinen Dorf aus weißen Steinen mit engen Gassen, bevor wir Gandalf auf dem ruhigen (und kostenlosen) Wohnmobilstellplatz am Fuße des Dorfes erreichen.

Real self-taught, he devotes 33 years of his life to build a dream palace in his garden alone. His inspiration comes from nature, postcards and the very first illustrated magazines that he deals.

During his daily country rounds of about 18 miles and with the help of this faithful wheelbarrow he pickes up stones. Alone, misunderstood, he writes down on his building “The work of one man”. His dream palace gets completed in 1912.
In the heart of a flourishing garden, he imagines a uninhabitable palace populated by an incredible bestiary: octopus, hind, caiman, elephant, pelican, bear, birds… But also giants, fairies, mythological figures or architectures from all the continents. An architectural work as unclassifiable as universal.
Unique in the world, the Ideal Palace has inspired artists for more than a century. Independent from any artistic trend, built with no architectural rules, the Ideal Palace has been admired by the Surrealists and is considered as an Outsider Art work. Véritable autodidacte, il va consacrer 33 ans de sa vie à bâtir seul, un palais de rêve dans son potager, inspiré par la nature, les cartes postales et les premiers magazines illustrés qu’il distribue.
Parcourant chaque jour une trentaine de kilomètres pour ses tournées en pleine campagne, il va ramasser des pierres, aidé de sa fidèle brouette. En solitaire, incompris, il inscrit sur son monument "travail d’un seul homme". Son palais de rêve est achevé en 1912.

First week in France / Première semaine en France / Erste Woche in Frankreich

The journey continues. Until now, it's more like holidays or a family weekend than a trip around the world.A geocaching interlude around Nancy (in Crévic to be precise) to stretch our legs along the Marne-Rhine canal.

Then 4 days in the Lyon area where I have a lot of family. With very good times spent with my loved ones.

Le voyage continue. Jusqu'à maintenant ca ressemble plus à des vacances ou à des weekend en famille qu'à un tour du monde.
Un intermède de géocaching dans les environs de Nancy (à Crévic pour être précis) pour se dégourdir les jambes le long du canal de la Marne au Rhin.

Puis 4 jours dans la région lyonnaise où j'ai beaucoup de famille. Avec de très bons moments passés avec mes proches.


Die Reise geht weiter. Bis jetzt sieht es mehr wie Urlaub oder wie ein Wochenende mit der Familie aus, als eine Reise um die Welt.
Ein Geocaching Zwischenspiel um Nancy (in Crévic, um genau zu sein), um unsere Beine ein wenig entlang dem Marne-Rhein-Kanal zu strecken.
Dann 4 Tage in der Gegend von Lyon, wo ich viele Verwandte habe und wo wir sehr schöne Momente mit unseren Lieben verbracht haben.

This meeting of globe-trotters has become over time an almost obligatory date for many of us. A unique opportunity to meet old friends and discover new experiences.

For us there were 2 motivations to start our trip with a weekend here:- first to  say goodbye to friends (Heike and Peter with their Amarok, Sandie and Karsten with "Ewald", Uschi and Peter with "Herr Meyer", Harald and Andrea with their Daily Bimobil ...)

- and then to try to gather some new information from experienced travelers on all kinds of topics related to our project. The harvest was good.

We also took the opportunity to get to know Enkirch and its wine business during a long guided wine and charcuterie tasting tour in the alleys of the village. After 8 stations it's about a liter of wine that we savor under the hot sun. We are pretty stunned when we join Gandalf.

After 3 nights we take the road Monday morning (September 3) to Luxembourg and France.

Departure. 2018-08-31

August 31 at 9:27 I switch on the ignition of the engine and in one tenth of a second 3 months of stress are forgotten.

 Our first goal is Friedrichshafen where I made an appointment at 10:00 in front of the factory to my former coworkers for the farewells. Because even if I do not miss my job I do not forget the third of a century spent in the company and the countless colleagues who accompanied my path. A moving moment. Two dozen colleagues come to greet us, although many are on summer vacation.

The aluminum side boxes are finally finished. 4 days before departure !!!
A significant amount of storage space that we absolutely need for our expedition.
It only remains to install the awning (plus some quick details) and Gandalf will be technically ready.

Then it will be the big cleaning and loading. What is not a small affair for a trip that must last 7 years !!!As we have just moved to another apartment we additionally have 2 apartments to clean and tidy up before leaving.
We absolutely want to keep the date of departure (always fixed on August 30th). It's going to be a challenge! A big challenge since the 30th of August is only 4 days later!

Third-party insurance: (deutsche Version weiter unten)
 Last week we took care of our third-party insurance at the last minute. Indeed, like most insurance, ours does not protect us in case of extended stay abroad. So it had to be changed. The choice is very limited. We did not find any that would protect us for a 7 year trip. Some protect up to 5 years and among them we found only one that meets our requirements: "Haftpflicht Helden" (https://haftpflichthelden.de/). We will be only insured for stays abroad of a maximum duration of 5 years but each return to Europe, even very short, puts the meter back to zero. Others (such HUK24 for example) did not consider a short return home (even of several weeks) as an interruption of the stay abroad.
An important additional point: "Haftpflicht Helden" also ensures drones (up to 5 kg). What others offer only with an extra policy.
All for 72 euros / year. What I consider reasonable.

Haftpflichtversicherung:
Letzte Woche haben wir uns in letzter Minute um unsere Haftpflichtversicherung gekümmert. In der Tat, wie die meisten Versicherungen, schützt sie uns nicht im Falle eines längeren Auslandsaufenthaltes. Also musste es geändert werden. Die Auswahl ist sehr begrenzt. Wir fanden keine, die uns während einer 7-jährigen Reise schützen würden. Einige schützen bis zu 5 Jahre und nur eine davon erfüllt unsere Anforderungen: "Haftpflicht Helden" (https://haftpflichthelden.de/). Wir werden nur für eine maximale Dauer von 5 Jahren versichert sein, aber jede Rückkehr nach Europa, sogar sehr kurz, stellt den Zähler auf Null zurück. Andere (wie zum Beispiel HUK24) halten einen kurzen Heimatsurlaub (auch von mehreren Wochen) nicht für eine Unterbrechung des Auslandsaufenthaltes.

Ein wichtiger Zusatzpunkt: bei der "Haftpflicht Helden" sind auch Drohnen (bis 5 kg) versichert. Was andere nur mit einer zusätzlichen Police anbieten.
Alles für 72 Euro / Jahr. Was ich für vernünftig halte.

On the other hand Gandalf is not really ready and time could become scarce. We're late because of an extended stay at the workshop to replace the turbo 😒😠.
I must finish the manufacture and installation of the side boxes, re-seal the skylights, finish the installation of the shower .... and many other small details to be improved.
