"April 1879. During one of his rounds, Ferdinand Cheval, rural postman, 43,
stumbles against such an odd stone that it awakes a dream. Real
self-taught, he devotes 33 years of his life to build a dream palace in
his garden alone. His inspiration comes from nature, postcards and the
very first illustrated magazines that he deals.
During his daily country rounds of about 18 miles
and with the help of this faithful wheelbarrow he pickes up stones.
Alone, misunderstood, he writes down on his building “The work of one
man”. His dream palace gets completed in 1912.
In the heart of a flourishing garden, he imagines a uninhabitable palace populated by an incredible bestiary: octopus, hind, caiman, elephant, pelican, bear, birds… But also giants, fairies, mythological figures or architectures from all the continents. An architectural work as unclassifiable as universal.
Unique in the world, the Ideal Palace has inspired artists for more than a century. Independent from any artistic trend, built with no architectural rules, the Ideal Palace has been admired by the Surrealists and is considered as an Outsider Art work. He has been classified Historical Monument in 1969 by André Malraux, French Minister for Cultural Affairs at that time under Naïve Art."

"Avril 1879. Ferdinand Cheval, facteur rural âgé alors de 43 ans, butte sur une pierre si bizarre lors de sa tournée qu’elle réveille un rêve. Véritable autodidacte, il va consacrer 33 ans de sa vie à bâtir seul, un palais de rêve dans son potager, inspiré par la nature, les cartes postales et les premiers magazines illustrés qu’il distribue.
Parcourant chaque jour une trentaine de kilomètres pour ses tournées en pleine campagne, il va ramasser des pierres, aidé de sa fidèle brouette. En solitaire, incompris, il inscrit sur son monument "travail d’un seul homme". Son palais de rêve est achevé en 1912.
Au coeur d’un jardin luxuriant, il imagine un palais inhabitable, peuplé d’un incroyable bestiaire - pieuvre, biche, caiman, éléphant, pélican, ours, oiseaux… Mais aussi des géants, des fées, des personnages mythologiques ou encore des cascades, des architectures de tous les continents. Une oeuvre architecturale aussi inclassable qu’universelle.
Unique au monde, le Palais Idéal a inspiré les artistes durant plus d’un siècle. Indépendant de tout courant artistique, construit sans aucune règle d’architecture, le Palais idéal a fait l’admiration des surréalistes, a été reconnu comme une oeuvre d’art brut. Il a été classé en 1969 Monument Historique par André Malraux, alors Ministre de la Culture, au titre de l’art naïf"

Auszug von der offiziellen Website:"April 1879. Während einer seiner Runden stolpert Ferdinand Cheval, Landpostbote, 43, über einen so merkwürdigen Stein, dass er einen Traum erweckt. Als Autodidakt widmet er 33 Jahre seines Lebens dem Bau eines Traumpalastes in seinem Garten. Seine Inspiration kommt von der Natur, Postkarten und den ersten Illustrierten, die er als Briefträger verteilt.Während seiner täglichen Landrunden von etwa 30 km und mit Hilfe seiner treuen Schubkarre nimmt er Steine auf. Allein, missverstanden, schreibt er auf sein Gebäude "Die Arbeit eines einzigen Mannes". Sein Traumpalast wird 1912 fertiggestellt.Im Herzen eines blühenden Gartens denkt er sich einen unbewohnbaren Palast, der von einem unglaublichen Bestiarium bewohnt wird: Oktopus, Reh, Kaiman, Elefant, Pelikan, Bär, Vogel ... Aber auch Riesen, Feen, mythologische Figuren oder Architekturen aus allen Kontinenten. Ein architektonisches Werk so unklassifizierbar wie universal.Einzigartig auf der Welt, hat der Ideale Palast seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert Künstler inspiriert. Unabhängig von jeglichem künstlerischen Trend, ohne architektonische Regeln gebaut, wurde der Ideale Palast von den Surrealisten bewundert und gilt als ein Outsider-Kunstwerk. 1969 wurde er von André Malraux, damals französischer Kulturminister unter Naive Kunst, zum Historischen Denkmal erklärt.
