Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana

2019-07-02: Lake Bosomtwe, the only natural lake in Ghana. In a meteorite crater 10.5 km in diameter.

Lake Bosomtwe is the only natural lake in Ghana, filling the crater left by a meteorite impact a little over a million years ago. The tektites (small pieces of rock vitrified during their projection hundreds of kilometers away and their rapid cooling in the atmosphere after the impact) found until Ivory Coast suggest that this meteorite was to measure about 500 m of diameter at the time of the collision at 20 km / s and at an angle of 20 ° to 30 ° from the east.

The level of the lake has varied greatly over the ages, it is fed only by precipitation. At its highest level it has happened to flow through a notch as a river, the lowest lake was a swamp surrounded by forests as about 300 years ago for example.

The road has led us to the shores of the lake to the small village of Abono from which a track of 2.6 km starting on the left will lead us to the "Wildwin Lodge" where we arrive at around 5:00 pm.
Grace, the service manager, welcomes us. She guides us through an access cut into the small adjacent wood to the shore of the lake, about fifty meters below the restaurant. The ground is a pretty very green meadow grass.
We settle about ten meters parallel to the banks of the lake which is smooth as a mirror in this beautiful late afternoon.

The next day, a day of idleness.

Christine takes advantage of the relative freshness of the morning to settle on a bench outside facing the lake to read and observe the fishermen and their interesting boats.

Because the lake is sacred, the boats and oars are banned, the fishermen sail on planks and row with the hands. Or rather, paddle with their hands, as they have somewhat diverted the taboo by using pieces of plastic.

We spend the afternoon outside on our bench. Some Togo Paradise Whydah occupy us. They are very beautiful birds with their long black tails, but they do not look very convenient, they are very aggressive towards other birds that dare to approach a little too closely.
